Google Business Profile: Still the King of Local SEO?

March 25, 2025

Even with AI search on the rise, a well-optimized Google Business Profile (GBP) is non-negotiable for local visibility.

Why GBP remains crucial:

  1. Direct Line to Google Maps & Local Pack: GBP is the primary data source for Google Maps and the coveted 'Local Pack' (the top 3 local business listings in search results). This is prime real estate for attracting local customers. Appearing in the Local Pack can increase your visibility by 300-500% compared to organic results alone.

  2. Foundation for Google's AI (SGE): Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) will undoubtedly pull heavily from GBP data for local queries. A complete and accurate profile will feed directly into AI-generated summaries and recommendations. If your GBP is thin or incomplete, AI models will skip over you in favor of competitors with richer profiles.

  3. Customer Interaction Hub: GBP allows customers to call you, visit your website, ask questions, leave reviews, and get directions – all directly from the search results. It's a mini-website in itself. For mobile users, this is especially critical — they want to act immediately, not navigate through multiple pages.

  4. Trust & Credibility: A verified and active GBP signals to Google (and users) that your business is legitimate and operational. Reviews, photos, and regular posts build further trust. Businesses with complete profiles are 2.7x more likely to be considered reputable by consumers.

Understanding the GBP Ranking Factors:

Google uses three primary factors to rank businesses in the Local Pack:

  • Relevance: How well your business matches the search query. This is where your categories, services, business description, and even review content come into play.

  • Distance: How close your business is to the searcher (or their defined location). You can't control this, but you CAN control whether you show up for searches in your service area.

  • Prominence: How well-known and trusted your business is. This is influenced by reviews, backlinks, mentions across the web, and your overall online presence.

Key GBP Optimization Tips for 2025:

  • Complete Every Section: Don't skip anything. Business name, address, phone, website, hours, categories, services, attributes, description – fill it all out accurately. Google specifically states that complete and accurate information helps with ranking.

  • Choose Precise Categories: Select the most specific primary category for your business, and add relevant secondary categories. Your primary category has the strongest ranking influence, so choose carefully. A 'plumber' will outrank a 'general contractor' for plumbing searches.

  • Service Area (If Applicable): Clearly define your service areas if you travel to customers. You can add up to 20 service areas. Be specific — list suburbs and towns, not just entire cities.

  • High-Quality Photos & Videos: Regularly upload photos of your storefront, products, services, team, and happy customers. Videos can also be powerful. Businesses with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more clicks to their websites.

  • Google Posts: Use Google Posts regularly to share updates, offers, events, and new blog content. This keeps your profile fresh and engaging. Posts expire after 7 days, so consistency matters. Aim for at least 1-2 posts per week.

  • Q&A Section: Proactively populate the Q&A section with common questions and your answers. Monitor and respond to customer questions promptly. This is an opportunity to embed keywords naturally and address objections before the customer even calls.

  • Reviews, Reviews, Reviews: Encourage customers to leave reviews. Respond to ALL reviews (positive and negative) professionally. Keyword-rich reviews can also help (see our other post on Google Maps Sauce!). The quantity, quality, and recency of reviews all impact ranking.

  • Services & Products: Detail your services and products within GBP. This provides more keywords for Google to match with searches. Be specific — instead of just 'plumbing,' list 'emergency plumbing,' 'blocked drain repair,' 'hot water cylinder installation,' etc.

  • Attributes: Select relevant attributes (e.g., 'wheelchair accessible,' 'free Wi-Fi,' 'women-led'). These help customers filter and find businesses that meet their specific needs. Google is constantly adding new attributes — check your dashboard monthly for updates.

  • Messaging: Enable messaging to allow customers to contact you directly from your profile. Response time is tracked and displayed publicly, so aim to reply within minutes, not hours.

  • Performance Monitoring: Regularly check your GBP Insights to understand how customers are finding you and what actions they're taking. Look for trends in search terms, photo views, and direction requests. Use this data to refine your strategy.

Advanced GBP Strategies:

  • Use the Products Tab: If you sell physical products, add them to your GBP with photos, descriptions, and prices. This can help you appear in product-related local searches.

  • Create Offers and Events: Use the 'Offer' and 'Event' post types to promote specials, sales, and community events. These post types include call-to-action buttons and date ranges.

  • Update for Seasonality: Adjust your hours, services, and posts for seasonal changes. A landscaping business might highlight 'winter pruning' services in autumn and 'spring clean-up' in September.

While AI search will diversify information sources, Google's ecosystem is vast. GBP is your cornerstone for local visibility within that ecosystem and likely a key data feed for its AI-driven local results. Don't neglect it!
